Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira, one of the anime titles that got me and many more people in the English-speaking world into anime in the first place.  It was reviewed with a straight face by film critics here in America (Roger Ebert loved it), and helped expand anime past the places out on the West Coast near Japanese population centers.  Plus, it’s just a beautifully animated film with lots of cool sequences and a unique soundtrack.
